in the Air Force, a congressional inquiry was magic, unless there was a darn good reason, whatever they wanted got done.  It didn't always make sense either.  I don't know if that has changed.

If Lieberman wants to support the Prez, there are two courses of action that he and his staff can take.  One is the belligerant approach detailed in this LTE, and the other is to lie and say the Senator will look into it.  Of course, the third is to actually look into the matter, but that probably doesn't support the President the way the President understands "supporting the President," and Joe wouldn't want that.  The response that this soldier got is incredibly arrogant.  Santorum answers my letters much more sympathetically than this, and we totally disagree about everything.

This reminds me of the time when I got a call that was meant for our congressman's local office.  The person went on and on about how she was being held captive, and only the congressman could do something about it.  I got her the correct number so she could get the congressman's help.  I can just imagine the poor staffer that took that phone call.  They have to at least humor their constituents.

      Congressionals were sacred.

"Congressionals" were any inquiries that had come from any member of Congress asking about a policy, procedure, etc., used or abused by my agency (GSA, so we got LOTS of Congressionals).

I was a lowly GS-3 clerk-typist, and it was my job to maintain the "Suspense" file -- which was where Congressionals were placed. Nothing was allowed to remain in that file for more than 30 days.

Responses were hand-typed in triplicate (this was at the dawn of the Word processor revolution) and they had to be perfect -- no corrections allowed. I used an IBM Selectric to type hundreds -- if not thousands -- of those damn letters. Many of them numerous times.

How DARE those assholes in Congress now ignore their constituents. Are they not held to the same rules as the rest of the Federal government?

Oh, wait...what am I saying? Of course they aren't. Sorry, how silly of me to expect more from my elected representatives.
