  •  Okay, but is it true that you can tell (0+ / 0-)

men from women by timing the length of time it takes for them to buy a pair of shoes? :P

    •  Hell no (7+ / 0-)

I try to mainly shop with lesbians. It's much more efficient.

    •  Oh, ha ha... not. (3+ / 0-)

I think the whole point of the post was geared towards getting rid of gender essentialism, yes?

It was a joke and it wasn't even offensive... unless you find the idea of 'women taking longer than men to shoe shop' as some great offense at women everywhere. Maybe it means women are just more discerning and stupid men don't give a shit what they put on their feet.

I find the idea of women as superficial shoe-obsessed pieces of fluff offensive, actually. And don't care to perpetuate that stereotype even in attempts @ humor.

You're reading WAAAAAAAAY more into it than anything I implied. Shoe-obsessed? I never suggested such a thing, unless 'buying shoes' equals an obsession.

Frankly, if you expect to remain within the law, I'm not sure how you get a pair of shoes other than buy them.

I'm not sure why taking longer than men to buy shoes makes women pieces of fluff either. As I said in the very post you replied to, it could mean they were far more careful and discerning and men were slovenly and didn't take care of themselves.

women often don't take longer to buy shoes than men do. And it's one of those statements that -- beyond being just a vast overgeneralization -- tends to put some people, often me included, into a bit of a froth -- because that stereotype is everywhere, and tends to be coupled with a "women are obsessed with their appearances while men are not" thing.

Gender essentialism -- the idea that men "are" one way while women "are" another way -- is a pervasive but harmful thing.

I'm not saying that was your intent at all. I'm just trying to explain where the offense is likely coming from.

totally read into the very small joke I made.

So maybe it isn't worth getting all that frothed up about and instantly assuming someone is this huge misogynist.

Considering my wife makes more money than I do, is higher educated and, in my opinion, far more talented and smarter than me, if I had a problem with gender equality, I don't think I'd be married six years now. :)

you don't have to actually be a misogynist to say or do things that perpetuate sexism. I think that most of this stuff survives more from the subtle messages normal, everyday, good people send all the time than from the diatribes of actual sexist jackasses.

But I understand your POV, and it's very hard to actually offend me, particularly on this stuff. Gender is a central topic in my life, and being someone who in trans and intentionally blurs the gender lines means I've wound up with some pretty thick skin.

Again, I'm just trying to explain why even small jokes like this can be offensive to some.

When they are actually buying and not just windowshopping.

Me, I buy mine online. Takes abbout 10 minutes.

This is coming from a former shoesalesman, so I'm not being sexist.

If I were being sexist I'd say "Ladies, if you have hairy toes, shave them. Most men won't notice, but some dudes just don't do hobbits."

                •  asdf (0+ / 0-)

I will repeat that you don't have to be out and out sexist to perpetuate sexist stereotypes.

Some women take longer than some men to buy shoes (windowshop, whatever). Some men take longer than some women to buy shoes. As a shoe salesman, you probably would never have experienced many shoppers, male or female, like me who avoid shoe stores at just about any cost. I generally own two or three pairs of shoes, and avoid replacing them until they are so disgusting that I get funny looks from homeless people.

Is it true that many women are into shoes? Sure. But there's nothing essential about being a woman that makes anybody be into shoes. There's not a recessive shoe-shopping gene expressed only in those of us who have XX chromosomes.

                  That's the point.
