"we really don't have to make fun of her appearance"

Actually, as long as the right likes to prop her up "because she's sexy" it's fair to call her "ugly."  Anorexia/transgender, no.

I think making fun of anybody for their appearance is stupid and shallow, but doing it to women in power is particularly appalling to me. Because the underlying message in that, which is reinforced throughout our culture in a bazillion different ways, is "a woman's worth is her appearance".

that message seems to only be getting worse. How is that possible?

it goes through cycles. We're in a bad cycle right now in terms of gender equality in pop culture -- which is not to say we shouldn't be fighting our asses off, because we absolutely should -- but is to say that it's going to be a frustrating 'nother few years at least.

For some reason, I always spot it first in the "fashion" trends. I remember looking at the direction clothing design was taking a couple of years ago and thinking, uh oh, this is going to get worse in popular culture before it gets better...

I wish I could pin down exactly what it was that made me think that.

it's nice to meet you spit :)  You make great points. I remember a few years back when my 5 year old niece wore a halloween costume that was sold at major department stores and looked exactly like a hooker outfit. It's hard to hit any more rock bottom than that.

Republicans were the ones orignally starting the "woman's worth is her appearance" thing with Coulter.  And Coulter's the one who said "the corn-fed, no makeup, natural fiber, no-bra-needing, sandal-wearing, hirsute, somewhat fragrant hippie-chick pie wagons they call 'women' at the Democratic National Convention" and "Now that [the 9/11 victims' widows] shelf life is dwindling, they'd better hurry up and appear in Playboy."

Making fun of Michael Moore's weight/appearance is more of a "well, d'uh" because he's not supposed to be good-looking and doesn't go around singing "I'm too sexy for my fat."  And it doesn't really have anything to do with his gender.

Ann used to be quite the looker. A woman  interviewed her on Hardball a couple weeks ago and Ann was quite subduesd.

At the end, the reporter said "Here's a clip from your first appearance 10 years ago. Wow, you look great. Bub-bye!"  Meow....Hiss Oh that was cold!
