in response to something upthread.  I agree 100%.  They will not let go easily.  In the past they would grudgingly concede that others had to be accomodated in getting their message out, but their house of cards is threatened unless they control ALL of it.

A pessimist sees a glass half empty. I see a paper cup with holes punched in it.

We wouldn't give a political sleaze our financial or organizing support to match the easy deals they get elswhere; so, they have nothing to gain by adopting our policies.

To see the trend around the bend:
I have to think "What would I do if I were a scumbag with no hope of tapping into this possibly threatening machine?"

      Answer:
1.) Appeasement through vague rhetoric (not necessarily with voting record).
2.) Squash it with new laws for the 21st century.
3.) Bog it down and gag it in court (with settlements $$$).
4.) Exact financial tolls through punitive charge Steven's flog "tubes."
5.) Ignore it and hope it disappears in shame from  lack of my attention (circa 2004)aka Bad Kitty!
6.) Out shout it with my big money media megaphone (alliteration of the letter "M" - call Cokie).
7.) Cry like a petulant baby and hope to slough off some pity votes when they target me (diaper wetting optional).

      sigh

      theorist and proud
