  •  It was a police riot. And it was ... (13+ / 0-)

... the civil rights act of 1964, the shearing off of George Corley Wallace from the party in 1968 and Nixon's race-based Southern Strategy that caused the backlash. But, of course, certain folks just love to forget about all that.

the civil rights movement played a role. So too did the Vietnam war. But the far left and the New Left turned America against the Democrats as well. Those hippie, counterculture protestors helped empower Nixon and his Republican successors. You can't deny that.

And the irony is that many of the radicals of that era--David Horowitz, for example--are now far right conservatives today. This is part of the reason why I don't respect the Green Party.

...of the 1960s lock, stock and barrel.

Name some other radicals from the '60s who are far-right conservatives today. I knew David Horowitz from his Ramparts days. He was a Stalinist then, and he's a Stalinist now. Many of us of the left publicly challenged his views then, and were treated the same way he treats opponents now. I had plenty of criticisms of the New Left of which I was a part in those days, and I have plenty now. But blaming the left for the rise to power by the Right is ludicrously ahistorical.

I wasn't born until 1978. So all I have to go on are the pictures and the videos I saw from that era. But I do think the protests did play a role in scaring white suburbanities away from the Democratic Party.

demonstrations. Most of the people in them are young white suburbanites.

            So am I.

            Well, maybe not young.

            But still.

ah, the foolishness of youth and the power of dreams -- we believed we could change the world being left us, the war, the environmental degradation, the commercialism, the stripping of civil rights, ... -- and some of us still do.

Look not to the effect your actions and thoughts will have on your generation, but on the 7th generation hence.  That is your purpose, that is your reason.
