the Masters. No idea where for the PhD - U of Bologna? my Italian is fairly good, love the culture!

plus you don't want someone so 'twee & pretentious' do you? oh, I forgot 'jejune' & 'Miss DeVore jr.' (as if that's insult? what is it with these ...biting tongue here ...counting to ten ...calm blue ocean... "nice persons who may misunderstand me".)

Good Mon, there's a good suck-up doggie! have an appeasement cookie ...

to well mannered 'nice' folk... just the way I am.

If you're ever in NYC, give me a shout.

What are you studying at Oxford? It's a nice town by the way... maybe you'll run into Thom York.

          •  well, I'm your perfect bitch then (2+ / 0-)

put a gag & dog collar on me & tie me to the bed!

easy with that branding iron ... make sure you plant it right where you'll want to be seeing it ...

love rural England ... love London too; it's the pulsing world itself.

            Who's Thom York?

Doesn't the Thames 'flow backward' through Oxfordtown? & it's just a stream, with a different name even - I'll have to go to the Oxford site & have a butcher's (hee hee, I get to learn rhyming slang! honey for the bee!)

Phil & lit. at Wolfson's College (Sir Isaiah Berlin's - they gave a Jew a knighthood! how things change). I want to do my thesis on, ahem "The Literature of Personal & Political Liberation: an Updated User's Guide" ... I actually had (most of) that pop into my head in November 02, when I was 15 in my first weeks at H. College, still trying to find the washrooms.

oh, & MsX/Ken Starr? show me the 'twee' part of this post; ppl prefer actual effin evidence, not bush...

post script (latin! how pretentious! says the Ken Starr projector) Letterman got off a good one last night (while you & I were discussing your Tribeca poem & in my case having a beer):

"Seems they've discovered more Americans can name the Three Stooges, than can name the three branches of government. Yep that's shocking isn't it? But in their defence, it's probably because the Three Sooges are more likely to get anything done...*rim shot!!

Letterman, Three Stooges, beer = more proof of how elitist & pretentious & out of touch I am!
Ms Ken Starr should have me lethally injected or multi-stabbed on my way to the Roman Senate...

but Brutus ... is an honorable man!

now, but decided I couldn't take the airport hassle.  (This was after I got over my partner's fear of my flying.)

          You'll be at which college?

But "An ... user's guide"?  You're appropriating the title?  Updated=reimagined??

            •  The Complete Dummies Guide to Ventiloquism (0+ / 0-)

              is still my fave!

by 'Updated' I meant ... where do things go from here? how do we use the great, magnificent tradition of the Enlightenment, Paine, Mill, Berlin, Rev King, Rawls, Bishop Tutu, Rorty, & corresponding literary figures (Dickens, Rushdie...), given the push/back against liberal traditions, the resurgence of 'vengeance' theosystems in the supposedly modern world, the rise/return of US fascism in the Bush era?

there's my life's work, what talent I have has to go to that, it's the one important thing where I hope I can make a difference; supporting reason against fear.

Lester Pearson forged a diplomatic end to the Suez Crisis of '56, partly by inserting peacekeeping troops - & justly received the Nobel Peace Prize. The citation was simple: "For saving the world."

All I want is for MY Nobel Literature Prize to read the same!!! lol

[& that, MissSpanishInquisition, is how a master does ...

(imagine this said in whatever is the female version of the avuncular voice), having studied and then taught in Oxford for 12 years (B.Phil, D.Phil and several research fellowships, etc), I can say:  nothing in Oxford that is admired is derivative.  You don't want to define your question in terms of the past.  You'll want to start with some hypotheses of where we need to go.

So you want to announce the limits of the past in answering the new questions that you are now articulating.

Seriously.  The approach that's admired is:  While we of course are cognizant of the past achievements in the tradition - and of course none of us can be completely independent of that tradition, however we might want to be - the tradition is now failing us, because it cannot articulate, still less answer, the following question:....

well, you'll see.  The best in Oxford is iconclastic, and originality is highly admired.  The American version of scholarly achievement is basically Germanic, and much in Oxford is defined against the idea of the boring Germanic literature searches, etc.

Well, I could go on.  Let us know what you think.

                •  Hear ya, no surprise in what you say. (1+ / 0-)

But like Stravinsky found fresh neo-classic fields in pastiches of pre-romantics (Bach, Pergolesi, Gesualdo) as a lever, to make a sharp antithesis to the slodge of the lumbering overhang of 19th Cent. romanticism, so a fresh assessment of a modern (ie MINE hee hee) incarnation of liberalism, which will soothe like an antidote meeting its poison, a specific for the disease, the Totalitarian Temptation of the Unitary Presidency, theo-vengeance & other perversions of neo-con, the life-hating echo of Falange & Fasce.

or I'll just write an incredibly good novel ...

      •  'Even' me? (0+ / 0-)

love's pretty simple - Kurt Vonnegut put it like this ("Sirens of Titan"? "Cat's Cradle"? not sure which)...

        "I'm Here! I'm Here!"

        "Glad you are!"

        put in bedroom, stir.

there are of course, harrumph, other texts that speak of these matters.

I might not be around at dK much longer; Someone thought it clever to unload on me at great length recently, now claims she's "semi-contrite" - I guess that's "half-good to hear"

left a real foul taste, I used to come here to fight the good fight, hear what's happening, find out what's on ppl's minds, say "I'm Here" & "Glad you are!". Good stuff.

Now, I hope that foul taste goes away soon (see my new sig line). She accused me (on "Top Comments", where everyone is nice to each other!) of an untrue thing, & then assessed my character (although she has never interacted with me here) & dismissed any defence I made as 'proof' that she was right.

        right ..., that ... makes ... sense ...

So, take the T/F  poll, Psi!... am I/are my posts ...

a)"Twee"? (I had to look it up),

        b)"pretentious"? (she's a big pal of A. - she's asking if I'm pretentious);

c)"not as smart/wonderful/dooby-dooby-doo as I think I am"? (not those exact words on the last one there ...)

genuinely curious to know your answer, (esp. since we've heard somewhere that you dig odd chicks)
        all the best,
        Mon

In my relatively short time alive, I've learned to take people for who they are. Nothing more, nothing less. When you do that, life is a lot less stressful...and a lot more enjoyable.

So, to answer your question, you're just another unique part in this very large community. And you should be glad that you're rather distinguishable from everyone else.

either email me or quit making 80% of your comments about me.

And my motivation had very little to do with Armando and while I recognize that it suits you rhetorically to make that claim, thereby implying that I acted as his puppet, it's inaccurate.

          •  I did not claim you attacked me for that reason. (1+ / 0-)

speculated in passing sure, but that's clearly just speculation, not anything like what you wrote about me.

[This is my second try at a reply. Please read patiently, not defensively. I know you can rise to a higher nature & try to be in my kitten heels for a minute here.]

Nor have 80% of my posts today been 'about you' although some were substantially, some in passing, quite a few political ones not even slightly. I accept that it probably seemed like 80% emotionally, but no, not really.

but has this been on my mind? Front & center.

My sig line is new though, & it recognises that I am very unhappy at your .... attacks on me (I want points here for not including an adjective!!! j/k)

I would be very happy if you cleaned this up at your end; I am really really sad at losing my feeling of safety here. I have already admitted I've been crying in frustration over this.

I also want some points for not posting what I just typed 15 minutes ago as my first, very FRANK reply- THAT I will be sending to your email - I will use my real email address (which you could have gotten anytime from Top Comments, Avila, FotC, any number of people) so I am trusting you not to send loopy weird-mail, but decent, respectful replies only to my permanent email.

I do deserve respect - if you don't understand that, ... well, what can I say.

Oh, I know what I can say: May enlightenment come to us all.

            Please, undo the damage,
            Monique
(a good person despite what you've said)

            email to follow.
