  •  We need militant moderates too... (6+ / 0-)

We are NEVER going to have an electoral majority in this country if we don't have political converts.

Many people who have been moderate Republicans in the past are gravitating to the Democratic Party now, largely because of the horrifying stupidity and ideological extremity of the Bush Administration.  Of course this means that those of us that are more progressive will be frustrated at times.  But if we remain a minority party, we will be frustrated ALL the time.  (Sound familiar?)  We are more likely to be persuasive with new members of our own party, than we will be with independents and Republicans.  Over time we won't get everything we want, but we will certainly get more than we do now--plus, we kill the rightward drift of the country.

Like it or not, a candidate like Webb is just the kind of Democrat that can win in Virginia.  With a more conventionally progressive candidate, we lose.  Reagan Republicans didn't piss on Reagan Democrats (who in time became Republicans themselves)--we shouldn't be pissing on new coalition members ourselves.  The FDR administration (remember their progressive record?) relied on a partnership with southern Democrats, with whom they had many differences. Like the old saw says, "Politics makes strange bedfellows."

If you want purity, and permanent minority status, you can ALWAYS join the Greens!
