and it also is a story with "legs" that has everything: children, perversion (the real kind, not kinky sex between consenting adults), danger and irate parents.

I was a rape crisis counselor. The issue doesn't become real until you hold a sobbing 10 or 12 year old who is crying because the neighbor or the coach or the uncle or (my worst case) the father has raped them.  The nicest victimw as raped whenever Momw ent out and Dad was home--and Mom knew and didn't do anything about it.  Alcoholism played a role and she was  German woman with no job skills who was afraid of losing her meal (and booze) ticket.  A neighbor finally reported it.

JonBenet got a lot of publicity. Dateline does a good thing when it catches these sickoes (and many reoffend--much higher recidivism rate than for other crimes).

They sensationalize it--but for years NO ONE talked about it at all. Incest victims were assumed to be lying, and being raped was somehow the victim's fault.

If this guy is guilty, I am glad they caught him. Now I'd like to see the SAME diligence applied to cases of poor black and Hispanic children .

I had the 12 year rold next door (he was a very BIG kid and hitpuberty younger than ordianry) try to molest me when I was 8. FOrtuantely my alrge rib cage, inherited from Dad's Russian maternal side of the family, enabled me to scream loud enough than a soprano playign Brunhilde in Gotterdammerung would have approved--and oen of the parents (I was playign cowboys and Indians and got "captured" which emant being confined to a treehoisue with a rope around my neck  and hands that tighened thenosoe if I fought--I think he was a good candidate for the Navy or Eagle Scout judging by his knot tying ability--with the litile rapist in the making) demanded I be let go, to shut me up.  It ws eyars before I told anyoenabout it, because soemhow I felt it was my fault.

Shedding light on pedophilia is a DAMNED good idea, and we need to keep up the pressure.

Wa JobBenet's death sensationalized? Damend straight,a nd ther was way too much coverage. But the AMber aLert syustem hgas caught some bastards and saved some lives.  We need to  keep pedophilia out of the closet and in the spoltlight.

I was also a rape crisis counselor, and this subject is easily dismissed by those who have neither been assaulted or worked with victims; unfortunately, there are a lot of people here who post cruel and casual comments in a diary like this.

more than alck of caring, I suspect.  But untilt he pressure began from sensational stories--nothing got done,a nd peopel looked the other way and pretended the Dirty Little Secret didn't exist, because it was toohorrible to linger on.

      •  Please tell me what was cruel or casual... (0+ / 0-)

...in what I wrote. I'm genuinely curious, because I don't think we're coming from different pages here.

In this case, I think JBR was victimized by the initial assault and murder. And then she was victimized again by a media and public that wanted to see sexualized images of a child played out on their TV sets night after night, or endless newsmagazine specials about Internet predators.

        •  It's not you per se--but the attiutde of some (0+ / 0-)

that pedophilia has been overdone and overcovered--which you implied in your comments on Dateline. Yes, it has been sensationalized.  Yes. the JBR case was appallingly ahndled and the family went through hell  (though the police WERE not wrong in looking closely t the family because most murders are committed by those closest to the victim, since they are most likely to have motive and opportunity--and incest IS all too common).

Myself, I'd like to see less coverage and less sensationalism of cases--but more attention paid to issues liek epdophilia and incest and domestic violence.

I reacted to those who were saying that we need less coverage of dead pretty white girls--actually I think we need MORE coverage missing minority children, not less coverage of a white victim.  Yes, most abductions re done by non-custodial parents, and yes, most missing kids are runaways--but there are pedophiles and sex killers out there who prey on the innocent. You can never cover that too much, and it can be doen without sensationalism.  SO I think you are wrong about Dateline's coverage of going after Internet predators. It's a real danger.

I had a brush with it. My idiotic niece when she was 12, wanted to play with out computer, and went into a chat room for 14+ and up--I only learned that later.  People starting IMing her as soon as they found out she was a dancer.  And shortly after she got off, I started getting disgusting teenage porn--with names of sites like "Horny Thai Teen Sluts" and :Nasty Teen nymphos".  Complained to the server, and ti finally stopped after several days.  SO I know there are those out there who target young teens and kids. And she was too naive,a t 12, to realize that.  If I hadn't  been keeping an eye on it, it could have been a lot worse.
