Hi Peter, I'm one of your constituents over in the dear old smokey Methow Valley. Today, watching the firefighters and all the support from across the nation, New Zealand and Austrailia battle our blaze it goes without saying that I'm watching a system strained and overloaded by equipment and manpower that is redirected away from our national emergency needs and ploughed into the Middle East. First hand, watching crews risk their lives here without all the equipment they need is sobering.

The fight here is merely one more snapshot of how off kilter this nation has become. I applaud you for joining this fight, I've met you twice and came away thinking you were up to the job and then some. Please remember that you have a fighting force of keyboards at your back and do not hesitate to issue a call to help. Thanks again.

I am deeply concerned at the resources our nation is directing toward the Middle East and away from serious needs at home. I heard recently that we could have given a full scholarship to every college student in the country with the money we have spent in Iraq.

I am also a volunteer firefighter, and I know first-hand the devastation a fire can bring. Keep those keyboards working!

I had heard that when US began its occupation of Iraq we forced the Iraqi farmers to replace their crops (which of course since this was the craddle of civilization their fields grew geographically adapted species) with ones "bought" from US.

As far as scholarships, think of how many great minds could have been put to the task of exploring solutions for resolution in Middle East, Scientific challenges met, energy solutions, this war hasn't just killed and maimed people, it has left some great minds unnurtured.

Speaking of redirecting our national assets, the Marines are calling up 2,500 members of the Individual Ready Reserve. Some of these folks haven't done any training for the better part of a decade.

And what about the families and careers these young men and women are being required to leave behind?

I'm also a volunteer firefighter in a rural district in Western Washington. What can the Federal government do to help first responders. Is it just grants for equipment and people? I know there are some of the recommendations of the 9/11 commission that haven't been fully implemented.
