    I loved every word in this post, except two in the title.  I'm glad my paw-paw didn't see "cendre mercredi," he would've blown a fuse.  Doesn't matter if your people are Cajun, Creole, or Colonial, Ash Wednesday is "mercredi des cendres" in French.

      The title was an afterthought and apparently that thought didn't make the trip between the brain and the keyboard.

      Originally, I had called it "Chasing the Ghouls of Gheens...small town Mardi Gras", but then changed it.  Knowing better doesn't always mean you do better.  Rather like our government.

        Didn't mean that post as degrading, and I'm glad you didn't take it as such.  The lack of education in French has allowed our language to slip into the dredges, and I can't condemn anyone but the inbred rednecks from up north who wrote the laws we live under.  Our grandparents were taught in school to be ashamed of our heritage, and that cancer has followed us to this day.
