    Internet do you mean? The copper that the phone companies own? The fiber that the cables and telcos own? The search engines (with our info) that Google and Yahoo own? The major media online?

    There is no central power capable because there is no central power, but the powerful interests involved have financial stakes that sometimes coincide against consumers.

    To say that the Internet cannot be crippled you would have to define what you mean by the Internet. Our current network is a mishmash of wires and protocols that took investment years of time and brains.

    How soon would a parallel one emerge, and how? Non-trivial, as physicist say. I would like to give you warp speed, I really would.
