  •  Your point about the fraud (5+ / 0-)

    In which you said:

Stories of wasted FEMA money by individuals have been splashed all over the news.  Our fellow countrymen are indignant about some poor slob going to a strip club with his FEMA check.  Nobody is having a cow about the no-bid contracts for the Bush Administration pals that are wasting a buttload of money.  The idiocy of paying a contractor $25 to haul debris which then subcontracts for $20 and so on until the actual price of a load becomes $3 is barely noted anywhere but political blogs.

I think that is key. They trumpet to the skies all documented incidents of individual fraud to spread the propaganda that it is an improper use of government to help tragically affected citizens. To me it is merely a testament to how badly government works when run by people invested in it working badly, with no sense of governing and responsible management of public funds. And as you point out, the same spotlight of fraud is conveniently never shown on the Halliburtons of the world, the many Republican-subsidized corporations which care nothing for the welfare of the people, and everything for their balance sheet bottom lines.

Thank you for your fine diary, NOLAWitch. Please keep speaking out so eloquently!

    •  If going to a strip club gave the guy comfort, (8+ / 0-)

more power to him.  After we got installed in Alexandria, we were looking for comfort too and we didn't even have half the misery to contend with that others did.  I remember being dragged to a Wal*Mart, which I freaking hate, and looking for the alcohol aisle.  Someone said, "This is Pineville.  You can't buy alcohol here."  I started railing, "I'm from New Orleans and I need alcohol, damnit!  We just went through a freaking hurricane!"

Fuck that!  We used our temporary Food Stamp card to buy steaks.  Nobody had better give us one iota of shit about it.  Now that we're home, we're back to scrimping and saving and helping others when we can.

How dare they make a big deal out of individual fraud when their cronies are making enough for an additional vacation home, a new private jet and a fatter Cayman Island bank account.

Moreover, it isn't being less responsible with money than is a federal government which pays for things out of deficits it intentionally and purposefully cultivates so it can lower taxes to pander to its rich base ...

I don't begrudge Katrina-area citizens whatever relief they can find from the stresses of that experience, and from the stresses of the ongoing experience with this miserably indifferent government.
