    I don't recall that the possibility of such attacks was every seriously proposed as a reason for the American people to support the war in Vietnam.

    Well there was some talk about a "domino theory" where if Viet Nam fell then the rest of Asia soon would too and in the end the yellow tide would swarm up California's beaches.  There really were some who talked that way at the time.

      the Domino Theory. It was the rationale for sending troops to Vietnam. I didn't really see it as the same idea as protecting us from terrorism, but when you think about there are parallels. Some proponents of the Domino Theory did go so far as to say that if Vietnam were allowed to fall to communism, it wouldn't be just southeast Asia that followed, but America as well. Many people did by into that and probably believed that we were fighting the communists over there so that we wouldn't have to fight them over here.
