  •  No, no, no, no, NO, NO, NO, NO!!! (11+ / 0-)

Damn it. When will Democrats stop complaining about Republican tactics and just fght back? The reponse to this is not a whinge about how unfair ABC is being, the response to this is
    --My Pet Goat
--The August 5 PDB and Bush's response ("You've covered your ass now)
--Rice's testimony before the 9/11 commission.
--The fact that Bush wouldn't testify alone or under oath. What was he hiding?
--Ashcroft refusing to increase the anti-terrorism budget of the FBI before 9/11 and increasing funds to fight prostitution in New Orleans instead.
--Rice saying no one could have imagined terrorists would use planes as weapons when that very summer the Genoa G-8 Summit was guarded against that very threat?

The Republicans have screwed up. They have opebned the door to retaliation. Not smart, not smart at all to fire the opening shot in the blame game when the FACTS are so demonstrably NOT ON YOUR SIDE.

I am so tired of elected Democrats like you, Rep Slaughter, going boo hoo when the Republicans use every bit of power they have to try to stay in power. Jesus Christ. Stop being a crybaby. Have the last 20 years taught you nothing about your opponents? Unscrupulous attacks are what they LIVE for.

Such claims are not just morally reprehensible and deeply irresponsible. They are also damaging to our nation, making it difficult, if not impossible, to have a serious and non-partisan discussion about how best to protect our country.

Morally reprehensible? Deeply irresponsible? Damaging to our nation? Making it difficult to have a non-partisan discussion? Have you been living under a goddamm rock? THIS is what Republicans do for a living.

The answer to a cheap shot is not an appeal to a non-existent referee. What do you think? Exposing the Republicans' dirty tactics is going to finally turn the bought-and-paid-for, millionaire Washington Press Corps against their paymasters? Are you INSANE? Because that's the term for people who do the exact same thing over and over and expect a differennt result.

The answer to a cheap shot is a pair of brass knuckles.

"This is outrageous!" Of course it is. So where is the outpouring of damning facts - the truth - on the senate floor, on the house floor, in unison, on the steps of the Capitol, etc.? "Questionable assertions" - Rep. Slaughter,  is that supposed to be a condemnation? How about "OUTRIGHT FALSE"? What's wrong with saying that? Why isn't every elected Dem calling Bush a pathetic, incapable lier with every breath? Because they are too busy posing ineffectual protests like this one. This talks the talk, but walks friggin ass backwards.

Congress gets back in session tomorrow. So this concern is kind of moot:

So where is the outpouring of damning facts - the truth - on the senate floor, on the house floor, in unison, on the steps of the Capitol, etc.?

I think Rep. Slaughter has earned her stripes in this community. I am sure we will hear more this upcoming week. And I am not sure if all this is "ineffectual." It starts our version of an "echo chamber." We have to start somewhere.

        •  Where's the demand that Bob Iger get his ass... (0+ / 0-)

...down to Capital Hill and explain himself when Congress reconvenes? Where's the threat to bring back the Fairness Doctrine when Democrats regain power? Where is the all-out attack on the right-wing media structure?

          Were is the steel?

It's not a question of whether Rep Slaughter "has earned her stripes." Writing some god diaries desn't exempt a bad one from criticism. Look, I WANT her to be chair of the Rules Committee. But after all this time, this is still the Shrumish, mild, mannered approach that has kept Congressional Democrats in the minority since 1994.

It's especially bad to sound like a schooleacher in an age of terror. What are thge Democrats going to do? Send Bin Laden to the principal's ofice? Make him sit in a corner?

Sorry, no. Not good enough to be mild-mannered with eople who are trying to destroy you, whether they are Republicans or terrorists.

If you don't counter the lies, they become incorporated truths into the body politic, and they say far more about our party than about Bill Clinton.

This is not about ABC being fair, this is about a network airing propaganda as if it were fact, before an election.

We complain about Dems being spineless?  Well, here's Louise Slaughter showing some spine.  You call a liar a liar.  You don't go: Yeah, but you did it too...

      •  Is she calling anyone a liar? (0+ / 0-)

No. Of course not. "Questionable assertions." That's part of the problem. No one is calling anyone a liar here, least of all Rep. Slaughter. The time is long, long past when words like "questionable assertions" were appropriate when confronted with defamatory lies.

And I disagree with your "you did it, too" point. What makes this so outrageous is that the Republicans, after blocking Clinton, after refusing to increase the anti-terrorsmbudget under Bush, with a president who says "Tyouve covered your ass, now I'm going fishing" when he gets a memo titled "Bin Laden Determined to Atack within the United States," try to blame 9/11 on the Clinton Administration. An administration, by the way, that did stop the Millenium Attacks.

It's not "you did it, too." It's "You're lying. You did it, not us."

Republicans are leading with their chin here and Rep Slaughter is playing defense. That's appallingly stupid. No wonder Democrats look like a bunch of schoolteachers who don't have the backbone to fight Al Qaeda. They are trying to be civilized with political opponents who are out to destroy them and who lie, distrort and demagogue at every possible opportunity -- because it's all they've got.
