    is running is the USA.

That's not what they're running. The United States is no more to them than a tool set they're using for their purposes.

Can these persons ever be completely stopped or completely eliminated? No. In fact, for that reason our military front must endure and seek to destroy the enemy.

    Oh Jesus, this is hopeless.

A military is intended to destroy the infrastructure of institutions and formal governments, not philosophical movements. Criminal movements, I dunno, maybe a battle here and there.

Militaries are effective because their appropriate target populations all work for hire. Movement populations don't. They work for cultural reasons, and most actions that demoralize hired institutional people energize and multiply movement fighters.

From now till the end of the war on terror there can't be a lot more than X days' worth of military mission all summed up. You got few targets, you got few tools for finding them, not much ability to infiltrate, and many if not most of the tactics like overkill that are essential against institutions just multiply the size and dedication of the kind of 'enemy' we face today.

Great job military killing Saddam's institutional government and the Taliban. Really, no snark. But that's all the military mission there was. After that we needed Marshall Plan, police security, nation building, economy building, humane and responsible economic policy--all kinds of nonmilitary activity to eliminate the drive to fight us terroristically.

So after those military victories the Taliban now gives press conferences, is gaining strength every day and has finally been convinced to stop eradicating heroin as it used to, and support the farmers bringing your children a record crop of it to shoot up and fund the Taliban return to power.

Iraq though isn't doing so well.

It's not Gunfight at the OK Corral, it's not D-Day, it's not Gettysburg, it's not Star Wars, it's mostly just not a war.

    •  Great post Gooserock! (0+ / 0-)

That's one of the best short summaries of the present reality that I've read.

Terrorism is a tactic, not an "enemy".

Religious fundamentalism is the "enemy" here. But religious fundamentalism is an idea. You can't fight ideas with bullets and bombs, unless (maybe) you are prepared to commit wholesale genocide. You can only defeat an idea with a better idea.

Maybe that was what the poster had in mind by "information front". But our "better idea" just appears bankrupt when we kill innocent people. The "military front" works against our "better idea", and is totally counterproductive.
