The risk is too minimal to not lie your ass off. The damage too great to change your story, these Neocons. And the sad part is I'm expecting alot of Republicans to win this cycle just on border security. In Texas, the Iraq War is second fiddle to border security/immigration.

Such posturing, such emphatic statements, such bullshit.

Is it possible that fear of war crimes investigations is causing them to lie so brazenly. And  fear of investigations is very real because they might lose the elections?

oscarsmom and I keep having this same discussion:  the brazen lying is just unconscionable to us.  For a democracy to work, the public needs to hear the truth.

But the neocon philosophy is that the only thing that is good for America is a "strong leader", someone "born to lead".  Lying to the public is necessary to keep those born to lead in power.  This point was argued by Leo Strauss, a German orthodox Jew who emigrated to England and then the US prior to WWII.  From the dKosopedia article on Strauss:

Shadia Drury of the University of Regina, author of 1999's Leo Strauss and the American Right, says "Strauss was neither a liberal nor a democrat... Perpetual deception of the citizens by those in power is critical (in Strauss's view) because they need to be led, and they need strong rulers to tell them what's good for them. .. The Weimar Republic (in Germany) was his model of liberal democracy for which he had huge contempt," added Drury. Liberalism in Weimar, in Strauss's view, led ultimately to the Nazi Holocaust against the Jews.

Lately, and more so since I read this stuff about Strauss, I've been having this problem with rage.  I'm having trouble sleeping, and I've spent a lot of time daydreaming about what circumstances would compel me to spend my time opposing a government overrun by people who are trying to turn America away from democracy and toward manipulation of the public and power-mad authoritarianism.

I really, really hope the neocons are not still in power in 2009.

Oscarsdad, I think their brazen lies have made us all sleepless in Seattle because we love our country and they actually hate freedom and truth. But, I am sleeping a little better lately because I see fear in the desperate way they are campaigning. Dailykos just showed a poll by CNN saying 57% favor investigations of the current administration.  That is pretty amazing in so-called war time and it must make the White House quiver. So, I'll just bet they are more sleepless than us.

        •  Thanks for a glint of hope in a dreary world! (0+ / 0-)

I just know it is hard to compete in the public opinion lottery with people who are willing to say anything to get what they want--and who are willing to prevent people from voting in the name of freedom.

    •  If FOX keeps this up they will be as bad as ABC! (0+ / 0-)

    •  Who said republicans are strong on immigration? (0+ / 0-)

What have they done right so far concerning immigration? They control congress yet they cant even decide on how to deal with the issue. They have idiots like Frist with their unrealistic immigration bills, and then you have Bush who's stance on immigration seems to be 'just ignore it and it'll go away.' All they have is their Iraq and Terror War rhetoric. Now that Iraq is obviously not connected to the larger struggle against terrorism, Republicans can only lie and bullshit their way to victory, which is what they have done best in the past. Sadly, the misinformed are a large constituency which the republicans always win over.
