    I think he feels he has to uphold some kind of family duty and allegiance to the (dead) Rhode Island Republican party, but I'm wondering if secretly he wants to go back to shoeing horses in Montana or whatever he did before becoming a Senator.

      If he really wanted to get re-elected, he could have done so easily as a Democrat and probably could have gotten some nice committee positions in the process.

      He obviously doesn't like his fellow Republican Senators. Whenever they vote, he comes in, votes, and leaves. He doesn't stick around and chat.

      My guess is he likes being a Rhode Island Republican in Rhode Island. Anywhere else in the country he would be a Democrat.
