It was almost worse than Bush's reelection in 2004.  Afterall, Benedict was a screwup by God!;)

Together, Jp2 and Benedict have and will have skewed the hierarchy of the church far to the right by the time Benedict is done.  It will take a long time for the Church to ride that out.  But it will.  I think they represent a reactionary wave, just as Bush does.  Human evolution happens over generations, not over election cycles.  We can't be intimidated and discouraged by the reactionary parts of generational change, as hard as they may be to get through.

I haven't read that much of Benedict and JP2.  What I have read suggests to me that neither is deep in their understanding of anything that lies outside reactionary catholicism.  Thankfully, they have continued the process of internationalizing the Church that John 23rd and Paul pushed forward.  But otherwise, their vision seems to be very narrow.

John was probably at least as conservative in his personal religiosity as Jp and Benedict.  But he did not fear the modern world.  He welcomed it as a challenge to the Church to deepen it's own faith, believing that a deeper faith would be a more universal faith.

That is the direction the Catholic Church is going in.   The reactionary wave will pass, I think.  But it will take a long time.

...as it turns out Pope Benedect has become a crushing disapointment to many of those on the right.  Check out this colum by Richard McBrien:

Andrew Greely had a similar column recently.

I think that's an overstatement based on the fact that Benedict hasn't turned out to be quite the firebreather he seemed to portray himself as being just prior to the conclave.

The meeting with Kung is definitely encouraging.
