I think it's quite possible they were going after Plame, or Plame plus Wilson, for several reasons.

    • Even if they weren't worried about Plame revealing that there was no intel, they may have believed Plame cued Wilson into saying what he did, reflecting not only his knowledge, but also hers
    • I think it is possible that a defector (or Woolsey, who introduced just about everyone of those fabricators to the CIA) figured out Plame was involved in CPD
    • I keep thinking of Libby's use of the names Victoria Wilson and Valerie Flame--she was traveling overseas under assumed names in the lead-up to war ... were these her assumed names?
    • AFAIK, the stories of 30 family members of Iraqi scientists never truly entered the reporting process (they don't appear in the SSCI 1 or 2), so it is possible Dick was afraid that would come out

In short, there are many scenarios in which I think it's possible that Valerie was a target herself.

There is also the Iran angle. Yes, she could probably make it harder to get to Iran. Though she certainly didn't succeed at stopping them from going to Iraq.

As you know, I've been trying to call out Tom McGuire on the Sy Hersh Stovepipe reporting on some sort of "ex-CIA" cabal behind the Niger forgeries.

Why? Because I think that will be the fall-back story once the Armitage dodge runs its course.

The blog post of his Tom sent me to is a muddle. VIPS had no reason to tell Sy Hersh that tale. Who did? The other day it hit me - Woolsey. Hersh describes his source as "a former senior CIA officer." Bingo!

Woolsey - another contender for the Nosferatu look-alike contest.
