  •  Biggest mistake the Dems have made (11+ / 0-)

in recent years was not standing behind Jack Murtha when he started his crusade. Would have given them instant credibility (and respectability) on criticism of the Cheney Misadministration from a military point of view.

    •  Many Dems defended Murtha (5+ / 0-)

especially when that congresswoman called him a coward.  Let's keep the attacks on Rumsfeld and the GOP and not make this a circular firing squad; plus your statement is false, as there were Dems out there defending his honor as soon as the GOP started trashing it.  And since then, MANY have endorsed some or all of his plan -- notice the Kerry/Feingold amendment in the Senate.

No "circular firing squad" but a well-reasoned critique of just what it is that keeps the Democrats from connecting with their natural constituencies. Sorry, but most voters have no idea what the "Kerry/Feingold amendment" is, or even that there is one; nor do they keep running tallies on who supports what. Democrats had a golden opportunity, at a critical juncture, to seize the high ground on this debate in a dramatic manner that all voters - even non-news-junkies - would have taken note of. Instead, they fretted, as usual, about being seen as 'too left' and dropped the ball yet again. They 'defended his honor' only because of a scurrilous attack by that Schmidt-loon; nice of them, but beside the point. Please don't confuse constructive criticism with firing squads, or being in denial with helping the Party.
