I seem to recall Bev Harris (blackboxvoting dot org?)
doing this with a machine in Florida last year, or the year before.
And this was diaried yesterday, I believe, and someone in the comments said that s/he and his/her dad wrote a hack for these machines in about 20 minutes. It seems the commenter said that they'd posted it on the internets also.
That being said, I'm glad that someone "legitimate" has finally brought this to light. Brings it out from under the heading of tinfoil-hattery.
But, you're right - most people will just duck-away. They don't wanna think about it. Too frightening to think their democracy has been stolen out from under their noses - and anyway, isn't the new season of Desperate Housewives starting soon, or something...?
Would that we were as brave as the people of Mexico and AMLO, and took to the streets in protest (and stayed there )when our election was stolen.

It is not even the first time first rate university computer scientist have weighed in on the subject and declared the machines insecure. Diebold left it’s source codes on an open website a couple of years ago and several respected computer scientists took a look at it and were upset by the design and security holes. Of course had the tampering been discovered, Diebold could have done a me culpa for exposing the code by accident and then said, “Well sorry but there the code was and anyone could have picked it up done the deed!” Smart CYA, I’d say.
