the Fairness Doctrine, we should be scrawling those 2 words on every available public surface until even little kids know what it is.

The whole problem, the Achilles Heel of the Super Size, bigger-is-better Society of the Spectacle is that it has a natural tendency to concentrate more and more vital power in fewer and fewer hands as the bar gets higher and higher for making any kind of lasting impression on its citizens, who have "seen it all" and require more and more unprecedentedly spectacular events and products to trigger their ever-more-fickle "buy" impulse.  The kind of resources needed to construct and promote commodities, whether they be laundry detergents or 24 hour news channels, that garner the attention and patronage of enough already-inundated consumers so that these commodities can sustain themselves has come to mean that only the strongest and richest "commodity providers" can remain.

It's the difference between the old Mom-and-Pop video stores of 20 years ago and Blockbuster or Netflix, between the old corner grocery store and the mega-supermarket, and between the sinking of the Titanic and the Twin Towers.
