    ...as calling for mainstreaming, and didn't interpret it that way.  I read it that the poster was referring to separate education for special ed students, but in the same location.

    I view mainstreaming as a totally separate issue.  My comment refers to the fact that I think the so-called "normal" kids should be exposed to children who are different from themselves, whatever that difference might be.

    I could be wrong.  It does happen. :-)

      You mean different classrooms in the same building?
      I am certainly OK with this in a lot of cases, but I think it poses a lot of logistical problems. I don't really see it as necessary.  The school I spoke of is in a building by itself.

      I don't think you are wrong that kids should be exposed to kids who are different, but I am not sure how this can best happen.

        ...in many relatively rural settings.  Separate in some of those settings can be profoundly unequal.

          are all urban; I hadn't thought about the case of rural schools, where things are quite different.
