  •  Yep (0+ / 0-)

I call it "liberal overthink." Nevertheless, the Rockbridge Institute is a welcomed asset for progressives (at least this one). It's not as though we can have too many weapons in our arsenal when it comes to messaging. If it doesn't work for you then don't use it.

I like your two simple points also. But in my view it's even more basic than that. The emotional tipping point will come when voters are ready for a change. All the linguistics in the world won't force that. People just have to be ready.

    •  Politicians have to educate (0+ / 0-)

Everyone thinks Newt Gingrich was Alvin Einstein for his "Never Educate" meme in 1994 and 1996. Its crap. It worked because their targets were ignorant rubes who already believed the bullshit anyway (who were told to vote for people who understood them), and smart people who were demoralized that no one was bothering to fight the lies with any clarity (who were told not to bother vote, they had already lost).

Waiting for voter mood to change is no strategy. The progressive vision is left unexplained, because by nature progressives expect people to be able to figure it out for themselves. Progressives believe in people, which is fine an a good progressive world, but in this one people are ignoramouses who have little access to find truth, little time to consider the world outside of their immediate lives, and are completely unprepared by our educational system to differentiate between Ann Coulter and Michael Moore books.

Ideally, the party or Move On or somebody would put the resources into a long term strategy to teach critical thinking skills and liberal policy that would not only carry a liberal message, but would also innoculate against right wing bullshit. Instead, we get frame games where its all just an effort to manipulate the gut for our side.

Smarter voters have gut reactions too - they are disgusted when they hear bullshit. That is a powerful motivator for our party, and one that lasts a lifetime instead of every two or four years trying to out manipulate the other side.
