    I agree completely. The first comprehensive analysis of the US energy system that I ever read was Amory Lovins, a few decades ago.

    Conservation and efficiency would do wonders.

    But we still need an alternative to gasoline.

    True, hydrogen is nothing but a medium for energy storage and it has nowhere near the energy density that gasoline does at STP.

    But it's non-polluting and we'll never run out of it. Storage solutions exist that allow it to be transported in effective densities and fuel cells are competitive with internal combustion engine in terms of efficiency. And, again, non-polluting.
