    Thanks for the eye opening info.  

    There is another right-wing sacred cow that you did not address: tort reform.  I don't think tort reform is the answer either; but your diary was so encyclopedic that I would like to see you address it.

    Your diary put me in mind of a system that is completely out of control: a complex system of agencies seeking local optimization that have led to global chaos and disaster.  

    The Free Market Believers think that unfettered local optimization always leads to global optimization...but they have no basis of this belief other than faith.

    The truth is that global optimization usually has to be imposed.  Independent agencies seeking local optimization cannot deliver the greatest good for the greatest number.

      I actually had a version of this diary that was more than twice as long, and that version did address tort reform.

      I'm going to work on sections like that one and publish them separately as diaries in the near future.

      For now I'll just say that the evidence is pretty clear: malpractice expenses are not even close to being a major factor behind the explosion in health care costs. It's about as big a factor as MCO profits.
