  •  I've asked this before, but (6+ / 0-)

Why are Americans so afraid of words?

Restore Democracy! Denounce the GOP (Georgie's Orwellian Party)!

    •  I really don't know the answer to that (6+ / 0-)

high5. Individually, they aren't. I think politically they have been given bad advice. It may be the result of the practice of hiring 'consultants' who advise politicians on how to deal with 'sensitive issues'.

The rightwing, using talk radio, blogs, Fox News etc. have demonized the word 'liberal'. Instead of ridiculing them from the beginning, Democrats decided to shy away from it themselves. This was completely wrong, imo. But I would not be surprised if this was the advice given to them by consultants. I wish they would fire all of them. With all the consulting they've done, they have been losing election after election.

    •  We didn't used to be so afraid (2+ / 0-)

      9/11 changed everything...

Free speech debate used to be like  " my free-speech rights extend to saying hurtful and false things that may harm others".

Now free speech debates are about " Can I express dissent."
