That's why I left my newspaper job in 2004. I couldn't sit by any longer.

When Okrent says, "the reporter's ideology [has] to be suppressed and submerged, so the reader has absolute confidence that what he or she is reading is not colored by previous views," he is making no sense. Suppressing views or ideology doesn't make them go away. And just because you have an opinion doesn't mean you are not capable of evenhanded reporting.

What's worse, a reporter who has convictions especially when it comes to the effect of government on the people, or a reporter who just doesn't give a shit? The latter will be spun by whoever is the best spinmeister. A thinking reporter can have an opinion and still be analytical and enterprising.

It's just ridiculous. So very happy to be out of that business.

I knew a bunch of reporters who would cover their beats and write an occasional column. And there is a columnist at my old paper who is always sent abroad to report on stories, or reports on stories here in the US. Wouldn't that be wrong? It is supposed to be. But nobody says anything. Why? Cause they like the guy. Journalism in the office is all about personalities and "stars." Judith Miller was a star. Linda Greenhouse is a hard-working reporter whose work, from what I have read, is always well-sourced, explanatory and evenhanded.

Time for some honesty. We can't rely on the traditional media to bring us that. But I am sure everyone here is well aware of that.
