Where are all the editors in all this?? Reporters don't put the paper together on their own.

I make my living as an editor (not in newspapers, thank heavens, but my undergrad degree is in journalism) and I can't believe that they let as much crap as they do get into print and online these days -- both the slanted stories AND the lousy writing.

The reporters wouldn't be continuing to write it if the editors weren't approving and printing it.

And yes, I know, the mid-level page and managing editors are getting their marching orders from someone else higher up.

I couldn't do it. I would have had to quit. I couldn't sleep at night.

It has been ever thus.  In the mid-70s, in my own radio journalism days, I had the fire/police beat in the coastal Connecticut town where I worked. Once, I came back with a story about a fire at a very upscale restaurant because the waiter wasn't careful when he flambeed something at the table, the flame ran UP the stream of alcohol, blew up the bottle, etc.

The story aired once.  A call from the station manager caused the news director to kill it "because we don't want to embarrass that restaurant; they're major advertisers."

That's a very small-time example of the very same type of thinking.
