  •  It WAS a journalistic ethics violation (0+ / 0-)

Those who criticized Ms. Greenhouse for publicly presenting an opinion on matters she writes of in her professional capacity as a journalist are spot on. They are absolutely right. She should have first resigned her position as a journalist on the Supreme Court beat before offering her opinion.

She is not a columnist. Her profession requires her to hold bias at sway. She has breached her ethics and -- IMO -- should be removed from her beat at the NY Times.

Reporters are asked all the time to give speeches just like the one she gave. Those who invite reporters to speak expect to hear something more in-depth than a value-less recitation of facts gleaned from their beats. They want to hear analysis and insight into the people they cover and the stories they write about.

If Linda Greenhouse's comments require resignation, then several thousand other resignations are in order.

Publishers too. They openly push pet charities and civic projects all the time. They have their papers sponsor local events that reporters are then required to cover.

If you culled the herd of all the sacred cows, pretty soon there would be no beef.

Her profession requires her to hold bias at sway.

Her profession requires her to exercise judgment on a daily basis.

      •  It's perfectly fine to give a speech (0+ / 0-)

It's even perfectly fine to offer an opinion(s) while giving a speech. As a journalist is is not proper to offer opinion(s) about matters covered under her beat. That's Journalism 101.

        •  I've taught Journalism 101 (0+ / 0-)

So save that for someone else.

Why would anyone be interested in listening to a reporter offering his/her opinion about something other than his/her area of expertise?

I wouldn't care to sit through a speech by Linda Greenhouse if all she did was offer gardening tips.
