I understand why Landrieu voted for this. She's a prison of Katrina reconstruction aid bills.

The question is what is the carrot that got Lautenberg, particularly, to vote for this bill. Does this have something to do with money for the PATH trains or New Jersey Transit, or blackmail, or what?

And I can't believe New Jersey is so warm toward torture. I live across the Hudson River from the WTC towers and watched them burn in real life, and I literally smelled them burning for weeks. And I'm even one of those moderates who would be very reasonable if I were on a jury and a military interrogator came along with a "ticking bomb" defense.

But there's a huge, huge, huge difference between being charitable toward people who have made tough decisions under terrible pressure and calmly, quietly voting to allow torture while in the comfort of a nice, cozy Senate chamber.

for this bill. I think it would have been helpful if all the Democrats would have stuck together and voted against it. It would have made the Democratic response to the weak on Nat. Security theme less credible. Having a dozen Dems vote with the Repuks only makes the courageous Dems who voted against it look weak. It is fucked.

I'm going to call and yell at my senators for voting for this bill, but I simply don't believe that anybody, even the Republicans, voted for this bill becaue they like it. The true motives of any Democrats who voted for this bill must be really terrifying. Maybe alien slugs really do control Bush and Rove and now have crawled into the brains of some Democratic senators.

I've given her a pass every other time because of the Katrina funding bind.  Not this time.

      •  Why did these people have to cast votes? (0+ / 0-)

What I don't understand is why so many Democrats had to cast votes on this issue at all. If the Bush Rovies had simply bribed or blackmailed them to get the bill through the Senate, you would think a lot of these people could have at least had the grace to abstain.

If these senators really thought opposition to the torture bill was doomed, I could understand them not going to the mat in a foolhardy attempt to block it, but I can't understand why anyone would actively VOTE FOR TORTURE.

If you can convince them it's crucial to the "war on terra", especially if those people watched the towers fall, and lost some neighbours, they'll approve of anything.  Many Americans just don't care enough to pay attention.
