    Of course, these cowardly knaves would rather be flayed alive and thrown into a vat of boiling monkey pee than be put under oath and cross-examined.

        . . . they give the short, rehersed, answer . . . then you just sit there, looking at them, then down at your notes, then back up at them (sort of deadpan), and, after just half a minute the vacuum of silence gets to be too much for them and they start running on at the mouth.  You can almost set your watch by 'em.
