  •  I disagree. Every human being (0+ / 0-)

is influenced by emotions, and Burns ad is hardhitting on the emotion of fear.  It might seem 2004 to you, but I doubt it will to most voters.  Tester should be addressing that ad directly and pointing out the flaws, not using subtlety with a counterad that doesn't call Burns out as a liar and show the flaws in his ad.  Maybe Montanans are a lot smarter than most people, and maybe they routinely control their fear better, but I kind of suspect they're pretty much like the rest of us.  I'd like to see Tester hitting back harder.

"Montanans want to be safe from terrorists..."

I presume he's refering to Montanans in Montana.

Are they really concerned about a terrorist attack in Montana?   I think not. They don't scare that easily.

Now if he had said "Americans want to be safe from terrorists". there would be a higher tendency to agree.

I think Burns missed the mark. His ad smacks of attempting to stampeed Montanans thru fear, right out of the well worn Rove playbook

      •  sorry. (0+ / 0-)

Are they really concerned about a terrorist attack in Montana?   I think not.

Montana has the largest border with Canada.  We've also go nuclear missles stored here.  We might not be as concerned about attacks as much as New York, but we certainly don't think that nothing is possible.

If Burns were so concerned with terrorists, he'd of done more to get us Homeland Security $ to protect our military bases, towns and border.

    •  We're different, (0+ / 0-)

as you can tell by the fact that our legislature condemned the "Patriot" Act, with a lot of Republican votes.

So how do we fight them without becoming them? Do we  sink to using fear as a weapon? I'll use my fears in a fictional Tester ad. So, maybe a response to the Burns ad would be something like this:

      Scene 1:
Run Tester in color: "I think the Patriot Act has very little to do with the War on Terrorism..."

Then show a picture of how terrorism has increased since the passage of the act... or something  showing that the Patriot act would not have snared the 9-11 hijackers. (What this would be, I don't have an idea for a visual.)

      Scene 2:
Run Tester in color: "I don't want to weaken the Patriot Act, I want to repeal it."

Then show some quote stating how most Montantans want to repeal the Patriot Act. Or, how again something how the Patriot Act has not been used to fight terrorism.

      Scene 3:
Run Tester in color: "I want to repeal it."

Then, show a scene of the government accessing your bank records... and having the ATM flashing (ACCOUNT LOCKED -- TERRORIST)... or something.

      Scene 4:
Run Tester in color: "I want to repeal it."

Then, show a scene of the government using medical rounding up "unfit" people, those who have some sort of visable disability... with family members begging the government thugs not to take away their children and spouse, mother, father etc.

      Scene 5:
Run Tester in color: "I want to repeal it."

Then, show a scene of a white, silver-haired man... a good Montanan being denied a gun sale... with a screen flashing... critizied Conrad Burns and George W. Bush... in the background... Maybe with the show security starting to move toward him.

      Scene 5:
Run Tester in color: "I want to repeal it."

Then show other significant Montanan politicians saying they oppose the patriot act.

      Scene 6:
Run Tester in color: "I want to repeal it."

Then show other significant Montanan politicians saying they oppose the patriot act. Get one to say, "and so do I."

      Scene 7:
Run Tester in color: "I want to repeal it."

How can Montanans be safe from terrorists...

When the Conrad Burns sees us as the terrorists?

      Scene 8:

Run Tester in color: "Let me be clear. I don't want to weaken the Patriot Act. I want to repeal it."

Show a scene of Bush saying he's the Decider.

      Scene 9:
Run Tester in color: "I think the Patriot Act has very little to do with the War on Terrorism..."

Then show a picture of Osama bin Laden and ask the question, has the Patriot act let Conrad Burns and George W. Bush kill this man?

Okay, so I most likely went over the top with the imagery above. There are many reasons why I'd never make a good candidate.

But, maybe the way to counter Burns ad is for Tester to embrace his words and do a jujitsu move on the Burns ad. Go after Burns and nail him on his support of neofascism and the Decider. Show Tester as a defender of the Bill or Rights, especially the 2nd amendment.

      •  I like it. I think that kind of (0+ / 0-)

direct hit would be great.  The other thing I'd like to see is a repeat of the pictures Burns had, while pointing out that not ONE of these people have been convicted of anything, and that each of the alleged "terrorist plots" have been little piffling allegations that went up in smoke and were actually nothing but smoke and mirrors for the sole purpose of scaring people.  I won't try with the imagery, 'cause I'm not much good at it.
