  •  If you are correct (11+ / 0-)

then perhaps it follows that they don't want a "sqeaky clean" candidate to serve in office. They'd rather have people with skeletons in their closet so they can push them around.

    •  EXACTLY!!! Blame the closet (7+ / 0-)

Closets make for easy extortion.  What better means of keeping pols in line than to threaten to expose their sexuality -- or in the case of Foley, his sexuality AND his appetite for nubile teen flesh.

The only way that Rove could keep such absolute lockstep uniformity (until now) was blackmail and extortion.  I have long believed that they get Frist to do their bidding by using the SEC investigation.  Imagine what he would do to have Rove keep the Feds off his back -- or better yet -- the pardon he might get.

DeLay was no different.  Everybody has a price.  Sometimes it is a carrot -- like earmarks -- sometimes it is a stick -- vote for us or we will tell...

      •  Ummm... (0+ / 0-)

nubile |ˈn(y)oōˌbīl; -bəl| adjective (of a girl or young woman) sexually mature; suitable for marriage. • (of a girl or young woman) sexually attractive : he employed a procession of nubile young secretaries.

I don't think that "nubile" is quite the correct word here.

      •  He was not blackmailed (1+ / 0-)

Foley was not threatened with outing, and that is an important distinction: the right as far back as at least McCarthy use that as a reason to exclude gays from politics.

He was threatened with the loss of lucrative lobbying ties in a post-Bush Washington.

        He caved to greed.

I can't help thinking though that Rove helped Foley GET INTO his position with the pages. Anyone covering that angle?

There is no doubt in my mind that he was extorted.  The end result would be loss of lobbying money.  But how well do you think he will do as a lobbyist now that he is outed as a lecher.  That kind of info would destroy anyone.  They had him by the proverbial balls and he knew it.  Never doubt it.

"squeaky-clean" has an entirely different connotation now ...
