    ... between rural and urban.

    What makes most states "purple" are predominantly blue cities and predominantly red relatively empty rural counties.

    The NYT election maps from 2004 were very good at showing this, but there were many good ones, for example the top link here.

      in Oklahoma, the cities vote Repub the rural areas dem.  The most Southern part of Oklahoma, Carl Alberts old district, Little Dixie, usually votes Democratic.

          but usually true, in most states.  I wonder if there are any other states like Oklahoma, where the rural areas are the most Democratic and the cities the most Republican parts of the state?
