McCain bails out as local speaker; Rove to pinch-hit

WASHINGTON - Erie County Republicans on Tuesday quickly recruited White House power hitter Karl Rove to speak at their annual black-tie dinner Oct. 20 after the front-runner for the party's presidential nomination, Sen. John McCain, dropped out unexpectedly.

In addition to speaking at the dinner, McCain was scheduled to lead a rally in Buffalo for embattled Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds, R-Clarence. McCain's office Tuesday scrubbed both events, claiming that the popular Arizona Republican had a scheduling conflict.

His presidential campaign folks told him there'd be a huge conflict among the American electorate if pictures circulated of him schmoozing with a GOP leader too busy covering-up the FoleyGate scandal to care whether underage Pages were in jeopardy.

McCain is going to have a lot more conflicts to get over if he wants to play big league ball in '08, like how the hell is he going to explain to voters about his unwavering support of the neo-con war in Iraq, his support of torture for prisoners, and his embrace of Jerry Falwell and the fundamentalist religious right?

That sound you hear is the shattering of the double-pane of glass under McCain's feet: one, that he's some kind of a moderate or maverick, and two, that he has any legitimate shot at the presidency. That day has come and gone.

Rove is a "power hitter?"  What, with all those home runs he's been hitting for Bush?

I guess if creating a naked dictator is your goal...

        Who decided that?

RevJoe, I'm with you.  Any good Democrat could knock McMcCain's cod piece off.
