      When Republican Mike Azinger tried to unseat Strickland in 2000, he dug out the vote on HCR 107 to use against the incumbent, announcing publicly that by voting "present" on the resolution, Strickland had "voted to give child molesters a free ride."

      Strickland fought back angrily, taking his case to the Ohio Elections Commission.

      In May 2001, the OEC announced a settlement with Azinger, in which the Republican - whom Strickland had crushed in the election - agreed to admit publicly that he'd broken a state law against telling lies about his opponent.
