ago, I was working at AltaVista (before they were acquired by Overture and then Yahoo).  They had a News feature way before Google did and it was during this tenure that Google introduced its News feature.  The product manager was very frustrated because they had a more thoughtful approach to the sources they selected and how they handled archived News whereas Google took a machine-based approach that let lots of more trivial news sources rise to the top.

In fact, the lack of human intervention was something that Google bragged about at the time.  I don't know if their approach or algorithm for news has changed but in general, they do ascribe a higher relevancy ranking to a site if lots of others link to it.  If all other elements in how the site is built are equal, the definitive site on a given subject would be lower in the rankings than questionable info if the latter was more "popular" in terms of linking.  It's why Wikipedia comes up so high on so many subjects.

Google is a such media darling, ANYTHING they do gets front page attention.  It's been very hard for other search engines to compete.  For complex searches, Google has never been the best.

    •  Retailers relize this (1+ / 0-)

I could be wrong, but with just general Google searches I am finding a lager percentage of commercial retail store hits. I think retailers have learned how to 'game' the algorithm. The same is probably true with news searches. People with an agenda are purposely 'gaming' the system. Maybe it is not a conscious move to the right by Google. But like you, I do not know their algorithm.

differently so that the average person could buy it too.  I almost bought some but the financial shows kept saying not to buy it.  So when it came out, they bought it and made a bundle:-) I didn't buy any:-)

I think they are good guys except for NSA.

Life is what you focus on. I am focused on Joe Lieberman and the republicans. It ain't pretty.
