    Civil law is meant to right wrongs, not to punish.
    We have a whole penal court system for that.

      Serve as an additional deterrent to stop and make an example of especially egregious conduct. As discussed above compensatory damages can sometimes only be a pinprick with big corporations. Moreover, can you jail a corporation?

      Criminal liability comes from violations of laws, civil liability also punishes conduct that falls within the realm of negligence, carrying out otherwise legal or permissible conduct in an unsafe manner.
