  •  Rednecks vs Good old boys (2+ / 0-)

Sorry to disagree with you but Rednecks are NOT nice people.   Rednecks are bigots and bullies.
BTW, I come from a working class family.  I spent time in the south as a child.  I know that not all southerners or working class people are rednecks.  But the current Republican party has made a point out of making rednecks comfortable with their bullying, bigotry and ignorance.  Rush et al are given a pass.  The MSM legitimaizes him and reinforces the redneck mindset.  It is time to shame them back to whereever the hell they come from South, East, North or West.
And that goes for the sex regulators in the Evangelical movement, my mother included.  It's not her business what consenting adults do in the privacy of their homes.
What you seem to not be getting is that these people have no shame anymore.  We need to introduce shame and make them feel it.  Bad behavior needs to be dealt with on the spot from now on.  Punishement needs to be immediate, appropriate to the offense and consistent.  That's not denigration.  That's called negative reinforcement and has been sadly lacking.

    •  I'm not defending (3+ / 0-)

religious extremists or racists or dittoheads, I'm just suggesting that a frame of us versus the "rednecks" is one doomed to fail.  When you use disparaging terms for people, you turn off a lot of potential allies, people who are super sensitive to being dismissed by what they view as elitist culture.  I'm really interested in getting the white working class voting for Dems again, and that means having respect and tolerance for views with which me might not agree.   In Webb's book he writes bitterly about how his Scots-Irish antecedents were sneered at as rednecks and white trash, so we need to tread carefully lest we unite these people with the theocrats and warmongers who exploit their resentment.  That doesn't mean adopting their views on homosexuality or evolution, mind you, but it does involve emphasizing the values we have in common, like not using them as cannon fodder in crazy foreign wars or shipping the entire manufacting base to Asia in one generation without providing any sort of safety net.  These people's ancestors almost worshipped Roosevelt, so there is common history here.

      •  We don't WANT the rednecks (0+ / 0-)

Shaming the rednecks isn't going to turn off the people we want to get.  What is it YOU don't get?  Working class people are not rednecks.  No wonder they call us elitists.
Working class people come in all flavors and varieties.  But right now, the rednecks are in charge.  Rednecks may have started out as a term for a working class guy but it really means a bigoted, ignorant bully.  They don't even have to be poor.  George Allen is a redneck.  Corker is a redneck.  George Bush is a redneck, but in his social status, they are called frat boys. You are the one equating redneck with working class.
BTW, not all working class people are Bush loving bigots.  Some are merely terrified- by the rednecks who are scaring them with crazy thoughts of murderous brown people, brown people sneaking across the border and nuke weilding yellow people.
Would you call all southerners rednecks?  I wouldn't.
