  •  On the question of Dept of Interior (6+ / 0-)

Upthread, someone asked about Garamendi's record at the Dept. of Interior.

Here's the part I know: Garamendi was one of several deputies charged with preparing President Clinton's response to the negotiations leading up the Kyoto Treaty.  His prep work included extensive investigations into impacts on land, lakes, rivers, etc. Convinced that climate change posed a very serious threat to our environment, he became an even more outspoken advocate for conservation and for investment in alternative sources of energy.

Also, while at Interior, Garamendi was one of the Clinton officials who traveled to New Orleans and helped sound the alarm, that because of global climate change, New Orleans was at serious risk of harm in the event of a significant hurricane.  Bush's statements after Katrina that the government never knew of the danger are completely false.  Money was allocated to rebuilding the levees after Garamendi's and Gore's tenure, and that money was taken away for the effort in Iraq.

For related reasons, Garamendi has been one of the leading proponents of investing in California's infrastructure, and has traveled the state warning of the danger to our water supply should we not tackle climate change AND build a new levee system.

He was also involved in saving thousands of redwood trees and worked to save Lake Tahoe. Links later (if one or another of you have not jumped into the breach - urk! - a levee joke?) Gotta be off-line for awhile: phone bank.
