Granted, most of that crowd is pretty unimpressive, but Clinton was nothing if not a "New Democrat", and his term in office was reasonably successful.

close only counts in horse shoes.  Clinton appeared more reasoned because "new" was yet to be seen.  Once seen, it wasn't good enough.  Welfare reform to mothers and babies but not corporations was "new".  NAFTA was "new".  Media consolidation was "new".  Yeah, Clinton was close; but no cigar and no pun intended.

I tend to think welfare reform ended up being done well; most studies have since shown that all the predicted disastrous effects failed to materialize, and in fact virtually nobody was just thrown out on the street without a job.  To the contrary, a bunch of things appear to have drastically improved in the years following the change, notably child poverty rates among African-Americans.

But then I'm more of a Kos-style "libertarian Democrat", so I suppose I would like one of those free-market Democrats...

        •  Well, I work in job training; (6+ / 0-)

and we do welfare reform in MI.  There have been some people, people who only needed a temporary hand and a boost, that having programs and services in place to provide an exit strategy from welfare was a big help for them.  Others, not so good.  Seeing moms with babies/toddlers on bus stop corners at 6:30 am in the freezing cold of winter does not give me a good feeling.  Particularly when I look at the corporate owned DLC on the dole, tax abatements provided willy nilly to companies with state's pleading, please don't move to another city, county, state...  Welfare reform was scape goating.  It was nasty, anal Reagan politics in full throat.  Yeah, welfare queens and all the rich people who own office and our government.  Yeah, those nasty welfare queens and their children.
