  •  Is the other half related to George Hansen? (2+ / 0-)

He was one crazy SOB. I was living in Idaho and just starting to be politically conscious when George was going through his Gotterdammerung.  Remember his "George the Dragon Slayer" comic book?  I lived in ID-01, but George was big news on Boise TV.

    •  He was nuts (2+ / 0-)

Seems to me he got thrown in prison for tax evasion, then ran his campaign out of prison, claiming all the while that the democrats were out to get him. I think he lost by a handful of votes but when he demanded a recall they kind of blew him off. He was a real crackpot, the perfect complement to Steve Symms at the time, who was a nutjob in his own right.

      •  Nuts alright (2+ / 0-)

I don't think he went to prison until after Stallings finally beat him. It took being censured by the House for enough people to turn against Hansen that he would lose the election.

And Stallings only beat him by about 160 votes, after the recount that Hansen demanded ended up widening widening the original vote.

Proud to say that the first time I voted was against Hansen, in the '82 misterms.

        •  AN odd result (3+ / 0-)

Now that I think about it, one odd result of Hansen's challenge was for all the rural addresses in Idaho to be changed from the old "Route X Box N" to something more like 1520 South 5200 East.

Something about the Route-Box addresses not being legitimate and therefore invalid for registration purposes and hence election results should be thrown out because they were tainted.

IIRC: It went its way through the courts and although Hansen didn't get what he wanted, the addresses all got changed for the future.

        •  My first vote, too (0+ / 0-)

And I was really proud to vote for Richard.

And no, he's no relation to George. There are so many Hansens in Idaho, I don't know how they keep the bloodlines straight.
