  •  yup (0+ / 0-)

Huge potential for misuse if the data was compromised. Which of course it would be, like your SSN in a laptop.

Although we are all branded to some extent already by the public availability of our campaign donations.

    •  You are missing the point (0+ / 0-)

Anything can be abused...like the current system.

However, it would be very easy to protect against abuse, including by the following:

      1. Make the system opt-in.  All you would need is a small fraction of voters to opt-in to make the system impervious to large-scale vote alteration.
      1. Make the receipts anonymous.  If you were issued a random ticket at a voting station, and could match the number up to stored votes later, it wouldn't have to be tied to your ID.  That could pose some problems in that you couldn't later prove your case, but it would still be an improvement.
      1. Have the databases stored securely, accessible only by court order, and destroyed after 30 days.  Any abuse would be punishable by 25 years in prison.

The bottom line is that we need to take the effort to make the system secure.  Many of the problems we have with e-voting are due to laziness of elected officials.  Most Democrats just don't give a crap and refuse to demand the type of security that any moron middle-manager in the private sector would demand from a vendor.

The whole mess needs to be standardized so that the solutions can be applied evenly across all the states.

What we have now is bullshit.
