Except that Alaska voters are idiots. Sorry. It was a bitter, bitter disappopintment for me when Fran lost, and I am still grieving over that. The only comfort is that many Murkowski voters have since come to their senses about the 2002 election.
Looking back, when I say that Palin is not the typical Republican, I mean that mainly in a marketing sense. She was perceived as a populist, anti-establishment figure -- her fights with the GOP establishment and all. I'm not saying she's acceptable to me. I'm not really talking about the substance of what she represents.
But a clearheaded, objective analysis must concede that Palin -- whatever her shortcomings -- has a powerful appeal that fits in with the current anti-incumbent, anti-establishment, throw-the-bums-out mood. Failure to acknowledge and effectively counter her appeal is what, in part, cost Knowles, a far more qualified candidate, the election.
I think Ben Stevens declined to run because 1. He knew he'd lose the primary, and 2. He needs to focus his energies on his criminal defense. He is also trying, desperately, to keep a low profile.
