I'll admit it's been awhile since I've been in NOLA but when I did spend time there it was quite clear that the African American community quite rightfully considered law enforcement to be criminals with badges. Jefferson is obviously very popular in his district and the people there don't have a lot of reason to believe law enforcement's version of events over anything Jefferson might say about the evidence against him no matter how lame it might sound to us.

I agree wholeheartedly that the netroots should get behind Carter but I expect that money isn't going to be nearly enough. We need to figure out a way to connect the netroots to the grassroots who are supporting Carter and pay careful attention to what they say about the current political climate and culture in the district. My guess is that it will quite likely take a lot of talking by well-known, trusted community members to persuade people to abandon Jefferson in favor of Carter.

I sure hope that someone from NOLA will post that Jefferson is toast if Carter is simply well-funded and that I'm full of hooey but I'm guessing not.

    •  Carter is also African-American. (2+ / 0-)

So there won't be any racial undertones to this.

According to her website she's been a community leader for a long time, worked to rebuild an African-American community center after it burned down, involved in hurricane relief work, etc. I'm sure the community knows who she is and won't perceive her as a law enforcement figure.
