  •  A bad sign (0+ / 0-)

We see on "our side" now an inability for about 30% of the public to part with their politician. Sometimes a politician is, from a purely factual basis, bad. Sometimes it's literally impossible to use formal logic to defend a politician.

Yet with Bush and now with Jefferson we see a new enemy, and in my opinion this enemy is worse than a lot of the politicians themselves. It scares me how effective elections can be if over a quarter of Americans are willing to support people who have committed crimes (and in the case of Bush, openly admitted so).

    •  Black Caucus crying racism didn't help (0+ / 0-)

Remember when Pelosi stripped Jefferson of his committee assignments, the Congressional Black Caucus held a press conference saying (in effect) that it was because he was African American.

In a city like New Orleans, where African Americans experience racism on a daily and institutional level, I don't think you can blame them for being receptive to such an argument.  In fact, amongst the Jefferson supporters I've talked to, they become incredibly defensive about his corruption and insist it was some sort of set-up.

Shame on the CBC for cheapening the civil rights movement by making Jefferson's punishment about race.
