I hate to be a pessimist, but this year was the "Perfect Storm" for winning Wyoming.  It was an off-year election with an unpopular president (although less unpopular in WY than most everywhere else) and an unpopular war against an ineffectual stupid witch who is one of the most dreadful campaigners ever and is hated by even her own party.

Sure, Trauner now has name recognition, but 2008 will be a presidential year (which will grab the attention of more of the Repub voters), the Wyoming GOP will either convince Cubin to retire or they'll nail her ass in the primary, and Trauner (or whoever runs as the Demo in 2008) will be tied to Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton and the Democratic presidential ticket (all bad things in WY).

My pet theory is that State Representative Colin Simpson (former Senator Alan Simpson's son) will run for Congress as a Republican.  He has name recognition (his father was beloved in the state and his grandfather was a Senator and a governor) and if  Colin is half as smart and personable as Alan Simpson was, then he'll be 10 times harder to beat than Babblin' Babs.

as a potential replacement for Craig Thomas. No way he finishes his term, especially after today's horrible news. But Simpson will be tough foe for the House if he does run. Who else?

But yes... a Dem in Wyo will face incredible odds in '08, especially if Hillary is at the top of the ticket. Kerry would have been tough as well, but he's out after the "joke."

This was the year. I Trauner goes for it in '08, he will need to start early and continue building on the coalitions & relationships he built with Indies and Republicans.

I've been totally exhausted -- and, yes, a bit depressed I'll admit -- today and so I haven't been on line until now. And when I saw this "today's horrible news," I went to the google news and there found the news about Craig.

If Craig can't finish his term, then Freudenthal will have the opportunity to appoint his replacement. Hey, Dave, I have a suggestion for you.........

forgot that we have that part in our constitution about the party submitting candidates' names for replacements.

I also just did a quick search of medical info for the type of leukemia he has. Prognosis for someone in his age group is not great.

BTW, I noticed that some articles are saying he looked "fine" on Saturday at the Cheney rally. My husband said he looked awful.

    •  That is a fact! (0+ / 0-)

I think we have come as close as we will get in a long time.  Cubin was the one we needed to run against, but she won't be the candidtae next time.  My money is on retirement.  She may be a bad rep, but she is no fool.  After all, nobody has won more state-wide elections in Wyoming than her.
