... whether or not true, the Playboys or Playgirls would have backfired ... never ask a question when the most likely answer in people's minds is the lesser of the two, because it cushions the attack.

And after Foley/Haggert, it would definitely have backfired to remind voters, in the words of Maher, "Who knew when the Republicans and Christian right got in bed together, it was in a stall in a truck stop on the New Jersey Turnpike?"

    •  Correction: no Playgirls (or boys), Playboy Corp (0+ / 0-)

sponsored a big party in connection with a sports event.

      It's so confusing, isn't it?
I mean, trying to deconstruct the attack ads when one doesn't have all day to do it.

      •  I don't understand the correction ... (0+ / 0-)

... you seem to be correcting a hypothetical extension to the actual attack ad by talking about what actually took place, but can't we safely assume that what actually took place would certainly not be reflected in any hypothetical extension?

        •  the party wasn't of, by, or for Play-types but (0+ / 0-)

was a generic event which happened to have Playboy corp. as a sponsor. That's the correction I heard when the ad gave the impression that Ford was cavorting at a Playboy-type Playboy party.
