but not for the reasons that may be assumed.

I’m not going to get into a debate about why Ford lost. Or any of the other issues (he’s Republican lite, another Lieberman), and all the other things that have been said by those who did not and do not support Ford.
I rec’d this diary for one reason. As you point out, Crusader and others have gone to great lengths to trash Ford and somewhat those who support(ed) him. One example that comes to mind was tigercourse repeatedly claiming that Ford physically attacked Mean Jean when she called Murtha a coward. No truth to that of course. If anyone thinks the ad with a white woman telling Ford to call her was effective, imagine how an ad that Ford had physically attacked a woman would have gone over, especially if there had been any truth to it what so ever.
So if there are 2 sides here and I decide to choose a side, it would be yours, Sidof79's and all the others who fought for your candidate with facts and integrity, not the other side that seemed willing to incorporate the very Republican tactics they claim to abhor.

I voted for Ford and tried to get others to do so as well.  And Crusader says he worked on the campaign.

We really wanted to do our part down here to turn the Senate blue, and we did our best.  It was just difficult when your friends who have been working with you for years to get Dems in office start saying they can't vote for this guy because he is so mean to his base.

Maybe, as some suggest, his bashing his base won over some more conservative voters, but I doubt it.  Instead of constantly emphasizing his social conservatism (which really began to take on a feel of he doth protest too much), he should have run with an emphasis on economic populism with his social conservatism as a bonus.  I've seen claims that he did run that way, but I was down here, and I rarely heard it.  He spent most of his time and money saying "How dare they call me a liberal!" (which may have been worth doing once, but there was some overkill that started to hurt liberals' feelings).  It wasn't the fear of social liberalism that beat him... it really wasn't.
